Roquebrune-sur-Argens

Roquebrune-sur-Argens lies beautifully at the foot of the big red rock, Rocher de Roquebrune, between the Massiv des Maures and the red Esterel mountains. Roquebrune-sur-Argens is an unspoilt and charming Provencal medieval village, founded in 975 A.C. at the top of a rock and on the right bank of the Argens river. Unfortunately, the village was almost destroyed in1592 during the religious wars, only an old tower is left. From here, there are fantastic panoramic views over the Argens plain to the north, with low mountains on the horizon.

Roquebrune-sur-Argens is a well-restored village with small, winding streets and houses with arcades from the 16th century. In the village there is also a very fine tower, La Tour de l’Horloge, with its bell tower from the 16th century. At the entrance, Entrée de Roquebrune, you will find the chapel, Saint-Pierre, from the 12th century. At your left hand side a little road leads to the monastery and chapel, Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, from the 17th century, situated at the top of a little wooded hill, at 142 metres altitude. The monastery is still inhabited.
