Situated not far from the Italian border, the ”lemon city” of Menton is the” most Italian” of the holiday resorts on the Côte d’Azur. Menton is reputed for being a retired peoples’ paradise because it has the mildest climate on the Mediterranean. In Menton it actually is so mild that lemon trees can grow here, as one of the only places in France. Every year in February there is a gigantic Lemon Festival, Fète du Citron, where the huge floats are built of 900,000 lemons and 300,000 oranges. It is very spectacular and the reason why Menton every year at this period receives around 400,000 visitors.

The old city, Vieux Menton, has an attractive pedestrian area – full of boutiques and cafés and with a magnitude of small narrow alleys and coloured houses.
I f you have had enough of strolling around looking at old houses in Vieux Menton, there are lots of other attractions such as museums, parks and gardens and divers special festivals and events ( like the already mentioned Lemon Festival). There is also a big casino on the waterfront close to the centre.
Menton is a city with so many attractions that you actually should spend at least two days here to fully appreciate the city. With an easy access to a number of picturesque mountain villages this place is also an excellent starting point for a longer holiday in the area.
Menton has fine sandy beaches on all sides of the city. The main part is situated west of the city towards Cap Martin. The one with easiest access is the little Plage des Sablettes at the foot of the old city. There are lots of private beaches with deck chair rental and bar service. But there are also many public beaches.
