Salon-de-Provence

Salon-de-Provence
Salon-de-Provence is often called the crossroads of Provence and that is not totally wrong. Within 50 km you have Arles to the west, Avignon to the north, Aix to the east and Marseille to the south. A holiday in Salon-de-Provence offers fantastic nature experiences in the very verdant and mountainous surroundings. The town lies in the heart of a region with olive groves and it has France’s most important market for olive oil. The area also offers good possibilities for exploring the Provencal hinterland and for a wide range of outdoor activities including walking and hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, angling, mountain biking, swimming and golfing.

La Porte de l'Horloge

The medieval quarter is built at the top of a little hill and is dominated by the rough looking castle, Château de l’Emperi, a former residence of the archbishops of Arles.

Built between the 10th and the 16th century, the castle is today in perfect condition. It is home for France’s biggest military museum.
Salon-de Provence

Salon-de-Provence is one of the oldest towns in Provence.

The old quarter is very charming with its narrow winding streets, idyllic squares, lined with shady plane trees in a warm and typical Provencal atmosphere. The astrologer and mystic Nostradamus lived here while writing his famous book on prophesies. His house in the old quarter is today a small museum which details his life.

In the old quarter one can also find the beautiful Roman Eglise St-Michel, built from 1220 to1239.

The church has two towers; one was built at the same time as the church, while the other was not built until the 15th century. Just outside the old town centre there is the church St. Laurent, constructed between 1344 and 1480, and the remains of the original citadel. In the St.Laurent church you can find Nostradamus’ grave.
