La Scheggina is part of Fattoria La Scheggia . It is a former agricultural estate dating back to the XV century that has been completely restored. Situated in a strategic position on the mountain pass between Tuscany and Umbria it is a perfect starting point for those who wish to spend a holiday of relaxation and cultural enjoyment. La Scheggia is situated on the ridge that divides the Arno valley from the Tiber valley, at an altitude of about 600 m, in an area rich in green woods and gravelled paths that, since ancient times, have inspired the great Masters in the creation of remarkable paintings. LEONARDO DA VINCI himself knew these places very well, and the proof of it is that in the map of the Chiana Valley, painted by the famous Master, la Scheggia is shown, together with the other medieval small towns, near the Castle of Montauto.

Within a radius of a few kilometres, it is possible to reach the main cities of art in Central Italy such as Florence and its surroundings, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, the National Park of Casentino, with the monasteries of Camaldoli and la Verna. On the way to Umbria you will reach the upper Tiber Valley, also called the "Museum Valley" scattered as it is with numerous villages rich in history and art: Anghiari, San Sepolcro, Città di Castello, Monterchi, Citerna, Umbertide, Montone, Gubbio, Assisi, Spello and Perugia are just some of them. And as you drive through the Bocca Tabaria pass you will be able to visit Urbino in the neighbouring Marche.

The hill of Montauto and its surrounding landscape, depicted in the background of the famous Resurrection by PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA, can be enjoyed from the ancient sentry post, located in the upper part of la Scheggia. Not far from la Scheggia, you can walk along the same paths that St. Francis of Assisi used to take on his way to la Verna, and along which he performed many miracles. A small chapel in the Castle of Montauto still bears his name.From Montauto Castle, you can walk down towards Anghiari and once you are there you can choose either explore the wonderful surroundings rich in parish churches and castles clinging to the hills, or wander around the narrow streets of the medieval village. Of extremely ancient origin, this small town flourished during the XII century thanks to the liberal policy supported by the Camaldolese monks who were given these sites by the Counts of Montauto and Galbino. Two wonderful museums will further your understanding of the history and culture of these places that witnessed the battle between the Milanese and Florentines in 1440 and were immortalised by Leonard da Vinci in his drawings. Even today Anghiari is an extremely lively cultural centre, well-known for the production of rich handloom woven fabrics and weapons. Mention must also be made of the deep-rooted antiquarian tradition and the highly developed technique of furniture restoration. Anghiari is a perfect starting point for many interesting excursions.
