Assisi

Assisi

Assisi sits on the slopes of Monte Subasio. From a distance, the city has a characteristic grey pink look due to the colors of the stones that were cut out from the mountain and used for construction. Assisi boasts magnificent views over the Spoleto-valley, dotted with farms and villages as far as you can see.

The city has Roman origins. Its present-day appearance is purely medieval, though, with narrow lanes and alleys in cobbled stone, winding up and down and intersected by open squares.

Basilica di San Francesco

Assisi is first of all well-known for being the birthplace for St.

Francis, Italy’s patron saint. It is told that Francis was a son of a well-to-do father but that he quite early in life abandoned his worldly ambitions. He founded the famous order of the Franciscans and initiated the foundation of the Poor Clare Sisters. Assisi has a distinct religious atmosphere, a phenomenon, also underlined by its many churches, and the town has become a symbol for peace in the world.
Basilica di San Francesco

The Basilica di S.

Francesco is a bi-level basilica, consisting of two churches. The lower church was built from 1228 to 1230 and houses St. Francis’ remains. The low-ceilinged, crypt like church is cut out of the cliff. The upper church was built from 1230 to 1233. Here, you can admire Giotto’s beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis.
The monastry Eremo delle Carceri

The monastery Eremo delle Carceri is built on the mountain slopes above Assisi by the caves that St Francis used when he needed to pray and contemplate.

There is also a simple outdoor church. Along the path leading to the church, visitors have put small homemade crosses. The Eremo has still today this tranquil, contemplative atmosphere. Santa Maria degli Angeli is venerated as the place of St. Francis’ death. You can see his deathbed inside the church. The church with its huge cupola stands at the foot of the hills of Assisi, 4 km from the town centre.
