Approximately 10 km from Toulon, Sanary-sur-Mer is a quiet little fishing town situated in the department of Var. Sanary is well protected from the Mistral by low wood covered mountains. It is a typical holiday resort which attracts a great number of tourists every year. The town’s pleasant and quiet atmosphere has seduced quite a lot of retired people to settle permanently.

  • Climbing: Climbers from all over Europe come to this place to climb in les Calenques at Cassis. You can either start from places of easy access (by walking or driving) or you can start directly from the water. At several places the cliffs rise vertically up to 240 metres above the sea level. Climbers who start from the seaside can either sail in small boats or tourist boats - les navettes - from the harbour of Cassis.

Sights in Sanary-sur-Mer

  • Jardin exotique – with its large collection of tropical plants
  • The pretty local church from the 19th century.
  • Tower from the beginning of the 14th century. Displays the cannon which put an Anglo-Sardine fleet to flight in 1707. The tower is today part of a hotel.

Lots of old fishing boats give atmosphere to the area around the harbour with its numerous restaurants and cafés.

It was in the clear blue sea of Sanary that the diving enthusiast Jacques Cousteau experimented with his new diving apparatus, fully developed in 1943.

The new thing about this apparatus was that one could dive without an oxygen supply from the surface. Today, diving and fishing are still very popular activities here.

Sanary has over the years attracted artists and authors, including the English author Aldous Huxley.

Later came Bertolt Brecht and his countryman Thomas Mann when they fled Hitler’s Nazi-Germany.

Every year the town organizes carnivals, evening markets in the summer and other festivities such as bouillabaisse days, sardine days and many other things.
