Fréjus

Fréjus
The old Roman town of Fréjus lies between Cannes and St-Tropez in the department of Var at the plain, which separates the very vigorous Massif des Maures to the west from the red Esterel mountains to the east. The town has beautiful natural surroundings and it is a very pleasant place to spend a holiday.

The Marina in Fréjus

Fréjus was the oldest Roman town in Gaul.

It was founded by Julius Cesar in 49 B.C. and thereafter vigorously expanded by August. It is an unbelievably exciting town with a great many historical remains. This includes for instance, an amphitheatre, a temple, parts of an aqueduct, remains of the Roman harbour - approximately in the centre of the town, columns, fragments of thousand years’ old walls, ruins of Roman gates, mosaics and huge stones with inscriptions from the Roman period.

The town’s greatest sight is la Cité Episcopale (the Bishops town), consisting of a medieval cathedral from the 10th-12th century, a monastery from the 13th century as well as a baptismal chapel from the end of the 4th century, supposedly the oldest in France.

Remains of an old amphitheatre

The town’s latest attraction is the new harbour, Port Fréjus, with its new quarter of luxury holiday apartments, hotels, restaurants and cafés, which look very different from those that you see, in general, on the Riviera – most interesting.

There is space for 10.000 holiday visitors and the harbour can receive up to 700 yachts.
