Rognes

Rognes
The little village of Rognes is beautifully situated at the foot of the Foussa hill between Salon-de- Provence and Aix-en-Provence, 5 km southwest of the Durance river. A holiday in Rognes offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as walking and hiking, climbing, sailing and golfing. It is also a good starting point for trips in the area with its charming medieval villages, the big port, Marseille, the impressive inlets at Cassis and the huge wetlands of la Camarque.

Town hall in Rognes

Rognes is a very old village, dating back to the Stone Age.

Unfortunately the village was almost destroyed in 1909 by a violent earthquake and subsequently almost abandoned. The new village was built at the foot of the old one. The old stone quarries were used for the reconstruction and some houses were partly built of the very famous red ochre stone, pierre de Rognes.
Old town houses in Rognes

The ruins of the old village still lie at the top of the hill as well as the ruins of the old castle, which was torn down in1595.

There are several castles and chapels in the region, dating back to the period between the 14th and the 17th century. Examples are Château de Cabanes, Château de Beaulieu and Château de Tournefort, rebuilt at the end of the 17th century with its original medieval tower.

Rognes is especially well known for its very fine wine, AOC Coteaux d’Aix, its truffles and its red stone which has been used for centuries in the area and which is today used for sculptures and other artistic purposes.
