Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for Culture initially to encourage youngsters to learn music, the Fête de la Musique is now one of the largest festivals in France. It is a free open air concert and anybody able to play an instrument or sing is encouraged to take part.
In Nice, the streets will be lined with every kind of musician. Every genre of music will be represented: jazz, pop, rock, metal, classical, folk, latin. Often there will be several genres all on one street, and one of the delights of the festival is to wander from band to band and experience music you would not otherwise listen to.
